특출한 재능을 가진 사람이 일정 수준의 성공을 이룬 다음에 급격히 무너지는 모습을 본 적이 있는가?
하버드 의과대학 소속의 심리학자 스티븐 버글래스는 «성공 증후군 (Success Syndrome)»이라는 책에서 말했다.

“최고의 업적을 이룬 사람도 스트레스를 관리하는 기질적인 기반이 없다면 결국 재앙을 맞게 된다.”
그런 사람들은 오만(Arrogance), 고통스러운 외로움(Aloneness), 파괴적인 모험 추구(Adventure-seeking), 외도(Adultery)라는 네가지 ‘A의 함정’중 한 가지 이상 빠지게 된다.
이는 나약한 기질 때문에 치르게 되는 무서운 대가이다.

자신이 버글래스가 말하는 네가지 A중 한 가지라도 해당한다면 성공에 따르는 어느 정도의 스트레서에서 벗어나기 위해 뭔가 조치를 취하고,
전문가의 도움을 구해야 한다.
시간이 흐르거나 더 많은 돈과 특권이 생기면 어둠의 골짜기에서 빠져나올 수 있을 거라는 헛된 희망을 갖지 마라.
기질적 결함은 시간이 지남에 따라 더욱 깊어지고 파괴적이 될 것이다.

이 네 가지 특성 중 어느 하나에 해당되지 않더라도 자신의 기질적 특성을 확인해 볼 필요는 있다.
당신은 말과 행동이 항상 일치하는 사람인가?
끝내기로 한 일은 언제나 완수하는가?
자녀에게 학예회나 야구 경기에 가겠다고 한 약속을 잘 지키는가?

리더에게 인격적 자질은 가장 중요한 자산이다.
미드 파크 사의 회장 G. 앨런 버나드는 이렇게 말했다.
“리더십에 반드시 필요한 항목은 리더의 윤리의식에 한 치의 의문도 없어야 한다는 점이다.
 리더는 옳고 그름의 경계를 넘어서야 할 뿐 아니라 ‘회색지대’에서도 완전히 물러나 있어야 한다.”

<LEADERS CANNOT RISE ABOVE THE 
 LIMITATIONS OF THEIR CHARACTER>

Have you ever seen highly talented people suddenly fall apart when they achieved a certain level of success?
Steven Berglas, 
a psychologist at Harvard Medical School 
and author of The Success Syndrome, 
says that people who achieve great heights 
but lack the bedrock character to sustain them through the stress 
are headed for disaster. 
He believes they are destined for one or more of the four A’s: 
ARROGANCE, 
painful feelings of ALONENESS, 
destructive ADVENTURE-SEEKING, 
or ADULTERY. 
Each is a terrible price to pay for weak character. 

If you’ve found yourself being sucked in by one of the four A’s that Berglas identifies, 
do what you must to step away from some of the stress of your success, 
and seek professional help. 
Don’t think that the valley you’re in will pass with time, 
more money, 
or increased prestige. 
Unaddressed cracks in character only get deeper and more destructive with time. 

If you’re not struggling in any of these four areas, 
you should still examine the condition of your character. 
Ask yourself whether your words and actions match
—all the time. 
When you say you’ll finish an assignment, 
do you always follow through? 
If you tell your children that you’ll make it to their recital or ball game, 
are you there for it? 

As you lead others, 
recognize that your character is your most important asset. 
G. Alan Bernard, president of Mid Park, Inc., stated, 
“The respect that leadership must have requires that one’s ethics be without question. 
 A leader not only stays above the line between right and wrong, 
 he stays well clear of the ‘gray areas.’”
